How Many Colors Are There On Cubefield

In den SerpeInSeno

This article appeared on XL Republic, May 2008 issue.

SerpeInSeno is a triune: Susan Bell, Camilla and Giovanna Pistone Falsini - illustrator and longtime friend, to the point of having invented a preposterous official biography published on this site serpeinseno.it - \u200b\u200binvent signed in 2005, and there is a riot of grotesque pupazzoni pseudo-horror, surreal tales childish, black humor and a postcard. SerpeInSeno is not art, nor craft: the world of three Roman girls follows, ironically or not is, the so-called figurine end'800, creators of fantastic imagery and street vendors with lots of walking banquet, the banquet that the snakes prepares to fury badge, kitchen magnets, prints and miniature squares. Vagabond by nature, SerpeInSeno has finally found a hole: The Tana and its of snakes is the name of the new laboratory / studio that the three are setting up the Pigneto in the heart of Rome that a bit 'trendy a bit' borgatara Hidden among the battered streets and consular Casilina Prenestina, including a Bangladeshi shop-el'ennesimo drink coffee.

A little 'den, a bit 'meeting for friends, a little' workshop, the Tana is in full swing. The opening is scheduled for days, and go through it all (or almost) three years in the work of award-winning work: tarot inspired to Dante's Inferno, bills for nonexistent sexy comedy, games, wall-themed fintogotico, accessories paradoxical and indigestible foods. The imagery of the three is colored, childish, round and homemade. But it is also fierce, playful, ironic and unhealthy. No one dares to call new pop, please. "We are not interested or current trends, and we do not identify in any Baseman and in no Ryden rite", insist the Snakes in chorus, then noted that caring, let alone, "are all names that we follow with interest," but woe to talk about "influences" or "inspiration." In fact, to investigate the roots of the trio, is a composite mosaic out of it that does not care to distinguish between punk and the Brothers Grimm. In between is the fascination with certain popular folklore as the old "tales on the phone," the couple Gianni Rodari / Bruno Munari, a classic of fiction for children going back almost fifty years ago, but fresh now as then and alienating . All this, however, is centrifuged, digested and reinterpreted in a stubbornly underground: more than a slogan, "Self" is a necessity for the snakes-under, which also betrays a certain ill-concealed survival tactic. Explain the three: "If we speak of illustration, the Italian publishing scene is bleak. Is considered only for the children, and this is reduced to mere decoration boundary, as harmless as possible. He thinks that, according to unwritten rules, the illustration for children is not recommended the use of black. The reason? Simple: it's a color that is too heavy, too heavy, too serious for our own poor and impressionable children.

Along with her, and together with the core of the notorious SUPERAMICI (Maicol and Mirco, Ratigher, Tuono Pettinato, Pira, etc.), the snakes have designed a kind of imagined community in which the militant underground goes hand in hand with a taste for gambling and for the crazy pure, made just a little 'more fanciful by the repeated tributes to the various Muppet Show and Monty Python. Over time, SerpeInSeno has expanded its range from self-produced prints to mural painting, from oil paintings to installations, from toys to digital inflated: it ranging from pins to the retrospectives, in collaboration with dilapidated area of \u200b\u200bcounterculture magazines to comic festivals, though - still insist on the three - "we do not have comics ever made. We do not come from that world, and we have only recently started dating, trying to translate the cartoon version of our universe. " The curriculum is increasingly in short-bodied and seems finally came time to film scripts and cartoons. Meanwhile, after three years on the road, it is time for the snakes to find a house. They found it strange, glittering like a script, and of course have renamed Tana.
